Schedule changes, such as adds and drops of courses, should be reflected on Blackboard within 15 minutes of being processed by CaneLink.
Blackboard data used to be updated once a day, in the evening. It is now updated in realtime, as changes are recognized in the CaneLink system. If you experience problems with this automated updating system, please contact the Blackboard Help Desk at blackboard help.miami.edu or UPDATE 2014-08-25: Use "Qwickly" to make your course sites available. Much faster and easier than the instructions below. Quickly is located on the Blackboard Home page, at the top of the left-hand column. New course sites on Blackboard are created "Unavailable." Faculty can work on the courses, but students cannot enter them. The faculty member can make the course site available when they want students to be able to get into it.
The process is very simple, requiring just four clicks. The steps and a one-minute video that demonstrates the process are included below. Click the "Read More" link to see the steps and/or view the video. If you would rather have us do it for you, send a list of the courses that you need made available to [email protected] and we will be happy to set the sites available. Dear Blackboard Users,

Internal usernames on Blackboard will change from the UM Email Alias to the UM ID on July 1, 2013. This change is required in order to work with a new video system, Kaltura, and to integrate with the CaneLink system.
This should not cause any change in behavior of the Blackboard system. You will still login with CaneID and students will be identified by first name and last name in discussion board posts. Once this change is made you will be able to search by username (UM ID or C-number), first name, last name, or email address when adding students to your class sites. If you have questions or experience problems, email the Blackboard Help Desk at [email protected], or call 305-284-3949 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m, Monday through Friday. Our summer upgrade of Blackboard, scheduled for June 28-30, 2013, will provide some exciting new features, including inline grading, a great calendar, and a retention center. For a sneak peek, view the short video on the http://goo.gl/28yp1 web page. Upcoming training sessions can be found on the http://iacevents.org web site.
A configuration change is being made to Blackboard on Friday, June 7, at 4 a.m. This change is not expected to have any effect on your access to the system. It may be that users are asked to accept a new security certificate once the change is applied. If asked, they should accept the new certificate. For assistance or questions, contact the Blackboard Help Desk at [email protected] or 305-284-3949 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m, Monday through Friday.
CaneLink, the new web site for Academic information at UM, has been added to the Blackboard hot links. The hot links are found in the upper right corner of all the pages in Blackboard. MyUM, which used to be the first hot link, is now located on the row below the CaneLink item. All of the academic material formerly found in MyUM, is now found in CaneLink, so it was promoted to the place of honor. http://canelink.miami.edu/ When you finish using Blackboard on a public computer, it is extremely important that you logout. Otherwise the next person that uses that computer might be using your account, without even knowing it. A new "Logout" module/link has been placed on the Blackboard > Home page, right below the "Tools" module. There is also a small "Logout" link at the top of every page in Blackboard, right before the "MyUM" link. Closing your browser does NOT log you out. You must use one of these links to safely end your Blackboard session. UM acquired the site license for Blackboard Mobile Learn about two weeks ago. Usage is increasing with more than 2,000 people using it since the beginning of the semester. This graph shows logins by hour of the day and indicates that between 1:00 am and 7:00 am usage is low, hopefully due to people resting. If you would like to see all the statistics, go to http://goo.gl/hcVht I believe the Blackboard login issue, generating the "Server Not Found" error, has been corrected.
I have verified that I can login by going to any of these addresses.
When I am logged in the address is always changed to https://www.courses.miami.edu If you are unable to login at this time, please shot down your browser and start over. If you still have a problem, create a ticket on our Blackboard Help Desk site. We will only know if you are having problems if you tell us, so please share the information. Depending on what address you are using when you go to Blackboard, you may get a "Server Not Found" error after authenticating with CaneID. If this happens to you, go to http://miami.edu/blackboard and then login. Everything should work. Although it looks the same as what you were doing, the address in the web browser will be different. You should be able to get in this way.
The security certificate warnings have been eliminated. All connections to Blackboard should now be secure, without a warning requesting that you confirm using the certificate. If you are trying to log into Blackboard, and are getting a "Server Not Found" error and/or a Security Certificate Warning at some point in the process, please try the following steps.
With the Blackboard Mobile Learn app you can access your course sites on Blackboard from your smart phone or tablet. The University has purchased a site license for this product, so everyone at UM can install it and use it. For more information on Blackboard Mobile Learn, and links to all the apps, go to http://goo.gl/6hqVc. The picture has been changed on the Blackboard login selection page. It now shows the new Split U located in front of the University Center. The login selection page is where you indicate whether you are logging in with your CaneID or a special Blackboard account. The Blackboard system at the University of Miami has been successfully upgraded from Blackboard Learn Service Pack (SP) 8 to SP 9. This upgrade does not change any features of the system or the interface. If you encounter problems with the system after the upgrade, please fill out a service ticket by clicking on the help icon (the question mark at the top of every screen in Blackboard. If you cannot log into Blackboard, go to "http://www.courses.miami.edu" and click on the "Contact the Blackboard Help Desk" link. Through either process you will be brought to this web page. Click on the "Create a Blackboard Help Desk Ticket" to bring up the service ticket. Fill out the form and submit it. You will get an email response when the ticket is created, and then updates as we work on it.
The Blackboard system has been upgraded and the system is now being verified. We will upgrade the status around 2:00 pm. At that time, if everything was successful, the system will be released for full use.
Until the testing is completed, there is a chance that any work performed on the system will be lost. If problems are discovered, it may be necessary to roll the system back to its status as of 8:00 pm on Friday, 12/21/2012. Any activity made to the system after 8:00 pm on Friday would be lost. This is a small risk, since everything looks good, but a risk you take if you decide to work on the system right now. If you are going to work on the system at this time, please keep copies of your work so that you can recreate it later, if the system should have to be restored. The UM Blackboard system maintenance began at 8:00 pm. Expect the next status report on Saturday morning around 10:00 am.
The Blackboard system at the University of Miami will be unavailable from 7:00 pm EST on Friday, December 21, 2012 until Monday, December 24, 2012, at 7:00 am EST. Come back here, to http://blackboardinfo.weebly.com, for status reports and updates during and after the service outage.
The spring 2013 courses will be added to the Blackboard system during the day on Monday, November 12, 2012. All teaching assignments and enrollments that have already been made will also be processed. On Monday night the system will begin processing updates every evening.
To view the courses, click on the "Courses" tab at the top of your Blackboard page. They won't be available in "My Current Courses" until December 18th 2012. Enter Student View In order to experience your Blackboard sites as a student experiences them, go to the "Course Management" portion of the menu bar on the left, open the "Course Tools" section, and click on the (NEW!) "Student View" link. You can then check the grades, submit an assessment, take a quiz, and anything else that a student can do in the course site. This is a great way to see what the student sees and do what the students can do. (Click on image for larger view.) Exit Student View To exit Student View, click on the "Faculty View" link at the bottom of the course/organization menu bar. This is the only link that is present when you are in Student View, but is not there for a normal student. (Click on image for larger view.) UPDATE 1/14/2013: The University of Miami has acquired the site license for Blackboard Mobile Learn.
Blackboard has changed the licensing for Blackboard Mobile Learn. The free version is no longer available. They have two pricing models. One has individuals paying for it. The other has the institution paying for a site license. A site license has been proposed for the University of Miami. Unless/until that is approved, paying the fee personally is your only option at this moment. If a site license is purchased, it will be effective from that date. No refunds will be provided to people who purchased individual copies. The EARLIEST the site license could be active appears to be summer 2013. The login process is currently the same as it used to be. The change was attempted at 7:00 am on Sunday, 10/7/2012, and did not work. At around 7:45 am the previous login process was restored.
The changeover process will be reviewed and attempted again at some future time. Bill Vilberg, [email protected], 786-250-2255 UPDATE @ 8:00 AM on 10/7/2012: This process failed to work so the previous login page/process has been restored. In order to fix a login problem that some people usingInternet Explorer were having, the login page and underlying process is being changed. The only change that you should see is a slightly different login selection page. You will login the same way you have in the past. The change will take place at 7:00 am on Sunday, October 7, 2012. Here is a screen shot of the new login selection page. You can see that it is almost identical to the current page. Please feel free to contact us with any questions or issues you might have. Our business hours are from Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm and our phone number is 305-284-3949 or you can email us at [email protected]. During the changeover you can text or call me, Bill Vilberg, on my cell phone at 786-218-3052.
In order to use Blackboard, you must have a Cane ID and password. All enrolled students, faculty, and staff at UM, have a Cane ID and use it to access computer systems including MyUM and Blackboard. There are some people who need access to Blackboard who are not enrolled students, faculty, or staff. Those people need to create a CaneID so that we can use it to create a special account on Blackboard for them.
NOTE: You should NOT create a Cane ID if you already have one. You should NOT create a Cane ID on your own. Only create a CaneID, using the instructions below, if you do not already have a Cane ID, and you have been directed to get one by the coordinator of your program. CaneID Creation Instructions:
The coordinator of your program will send the information to [email protected] so that an account can be created. The Blackboard Help Desk will have the account created and then notify the coordinator. THe coordinator of your program will, in turn, notify you. |
